Citizenship Law and the Challenge of Multiculturalism – The Case of Denmark

Silvia Adamo (phd.jur.) will hold a seminar on the challenges citizenship law is confronted with due to the pluralisation of the Danish society.

Citizenship law was until recently a quite unnoticed legal subject in Denmark. This has significantly changed in the latest years, as the pressures of economic migrants, who wish to enter and become integrated in Denmark, and the legal constraints stemming from especially European law have impacted on the composition of the population and the rules that they are subject to. There is now an animated debate on citizenship in the Danish political arena, and the legal acts on citizenship are frequently amended.

This presentation will offer an introduction of the contemporary legal context on citizenship and confront it with the new challenges coming from the pluralism of nationalities and ethnicities in Denmark. The aim is on the one side to analyse the concept of citizenship in its legal dimension, and on the other side to explore whether it is possible to draw inspiration from Will Kymlicka’s multicultural framework to design legal instruments on citizenship.

Everybody is welcome!

Paper is expected to be read in advance and can be downloaded from http://cesem.ku.dk/papers/ a week before the seminar.
