"Multiculturalisme et culture: La portée de la critique réductionniste" - Xavier Landes publishes an article
Xavier Landes has just published an article in French titled "Multiculturalisme et culture: La portée de la critique réductionniste" (Multiculturalism and Culture: The Scope of the Reductionist Critique) in La Revue Philosophique de Louvain.
This article engages the role played by culture in a part of multicultural literature. Through the study of Charles Taylor and Will Kymlicka's positions, it introduces to the critique of reductionism which is addressed to approaches founded on the intrinsic or instrumental value of culture. On epistemological grounds, these approaches would assimilate cultures to closed ensembles with strictly defined contours and content. On political grounds, such a conception faces three types of objections. It would favor the propagation of stereotypes, influence the balance of power within communities and alter the distribution of resources . The idea advanced in this article is that the critique of reductionism reveals an inflection towards more dynamic approaches within multiculturalism.
